AbstractIn this lecture, we emphasize new opportunities in biological imaging and medical disease detection provided by Multi-Photon Quantum Dots (MPQD). This novel concept combines the advantages of normal quantum dots, i.e. brilliant luminescence and low photo-resistance, with the three-dimensional confocal and penetrative quality of multi-photon excitation, something relating to fluorescence based experiments in biology and medicine. A number of applications are explored, in particular the real-time study of single protein dynamics, protein transportation in plasma membranes, and organization of proteins in micro domains. A second class of applications concerns instrumentation for new medical diagnosis for early stage diseases, such as cardiovascular inflammatory disease. We concentrate on exploring the best-available scientific know-how in the field of solid-state nanotechnology to develop nano particles based bioimaging for noninvasive healthcare, and for confocal high-resolution protein imaging and protein tracking.
